octNOber

by Ally Harding, 5:00 AM
So I decided last week,  I read the idea on someone else's blog, that I was going to make this month be OctNOber. The NO is for NO shopping! So the whole month of October I'm not going to buy anything. That doesn't mean I won't buy food or things for the house it just means I won't buy meaningless clothes. It may even roll over to NOvember but lets not get ahead of ourselves. I'm sure you all know but having and reading other blogs is a good and bad thing. It's fun to make an Obsessions list and see what other people are buying or wishing for but that can lead to buying clothes and accessories you really don't need just really want at that time. I'm not going to act like I'm a big $$ making girl so I do just like everyone else put some of my buys on credit cards. I'm not in crazy debt that I can't get out of and the IRS is calling me nonstop, no. But I do have some credit card debt that I'd love to get rid of and the only way to get rid of it is to stop spending and start saving. So that's my plan for the month. It's gonna suck I know, but it'll also teach me that I can live within my means and shop within my closet more than I think I can. We need to get our house painted, get our hardwood floors redone, finish decorating the guest bedrooms and our bedroom, I'd love to get a new car, and being newlyweds we just need a decent amount of money in savings we don't have right now. All this can, and will be done eventually. And that's what I need to focus on rather than buying those boots I really really want but don't need right now.

We have a lot of fun stuff coming on I need to focus on too. Some more USC games, Scarowinds next weekend, Atlanta for Thanksgiving, Christmas-- enough said. If anyone would like to join me for OctNOber then please do! I need all the support I can get!

Disclaimer: OctNOBer started October 1, so I did manage to sneak a few Fall "necessities" in before it started. I know I know, shoot me!

I really think I might buy this book. It just sounds too amazing to pass up!

  3. I admire you for doing this...I've reigned in my spending lately too, but I haven't truly committed to cutting myself off. It's especially hard to do when you're in the world of blogging. I hope it goes well for you!

  4. I'm thinking that maybe I should join you. But, I have a feeling that I will make a list of things and then go out and binge buy in November. Good for you for being smart with your money!

  5. My roomie has that book too! I know I need to reel in my spending, so I'll definitely have to cut down. If you haven't heard of her, check out Lara Casey's blog. She is the editor-in-chief of Southern Weddings Magazine and she is doing the Contentment Challenge (pretty much the same thing you are doing) for three months - including Christmas! Google her and you'll find the blog, her reasons for doing it are super inspiring :)

  6. My coworker and I were reading your blog at the same time and both say "good for you!" I think you posted this recently about how even just making 'lists' of 'stuff' helps to make us realize we never NEEDED any of it. And any debt is always an annoying burden (I know). Cheers to you - and maybe I'll just try to join you :)

  9. My hubby would be so supportive if I tried this! I really should.... I think I've done it without meaning to recently. We've been on a budget so I've had to be very mindful! It is tough! But worth it.
