To Bar or Not to Bar?

Our dining room is the first thing you see when you walk in our house. We don't have much in it besides a table and a few pictures on the wall but I still love having it. We've used it one time, Thanksgiving last year, but I think it's good to have for when we do start a family or if we have more than 4 people over one night for dinner. My husband thinks it's a waste of space, it is a very large room, and he wants to take out the table and replace it with a pool table, get a bar installed, put in a few TV's, and put in a cocktail table. He wants to turn in into a lounge we'd hang out in all the time. He thinks it would be so cool and we'd have people banging down the door to come and hang out in our lounge. I think this idea is ridiculous and love having a formal dining room. I told him he could turn our detached garage into a lounge area but that would of course require insulating the garage and putting in an A/C unit. So it would cost a lot more than if we used our dining room. Nothing is going to happen right now but he's dead serious about doing it one day. Something about the first thing you see walking into our house is a pool table and bar just rubs me the wrong way. What do you guys think? Do you think a dining room is necessary or would turn into a lounge room with a pool table and a bar?

I looked up some pictures to get an idea of what the room could look like. At first I imagined some sort of Man Cave, which I still think is what it'll be, but I did find some good looking lounge rooms that I wouldn't mind hanging out in.

I realize these are probably in someone's basement and in a much bigger space but they're an idea for sure. For now we'll stick to our boring dining room. I am getting my Mom's old bar cart a vintage bar cart to put in it soon so we'll have something else besides the table in the room!

  2. I think the idea of having a lounge is super cool, especially if you would use it. Formal dining rooms can sometimes be wasted space if you don't use it very often.

  3. I think you could make it look super chic and swanky!

  4. My hubby has tried that idea too... He wants to convert our living room into a game area and put a BASKETBALL HOOP thingy... Um - NO! Haha. I guess if done right your dining room could look cool, but you're right - it's nice to have the dining space when people come over or as your family grows.

  5. Think it's a great idea! Our house is the same way - dining room right when you walk in. We turned it into a playroom but as Olivia gets older I can definitely see us turning it into a lounge space!

  6. Dining room!! I'm all about tradition so I can't wait to have a dining room for holiday dinners and big family get togethers!! Pool tables and bars are fun but when you have kids I think you will regret not having a big dining room.

  7. Ally! When I moved into Justins house in SC, his dining room already had a pool table in it! He actually changed the building plans of that room to remove a coat closet so he'd have wider walls. I went with it and painted the room a rich navy to compliment the wood. It was the first room people saw when they walked in so I wanted it to be sophisticated....I used Justin's guitars as art on the walls and we set up a man bar space with only bourbon and glass decanters. And leather chairs and barstools for pool players...

  8. I think I have to agree with you. I like having a formal dining room, and as we get older and entertain more, it will get used more and more. G and I have the "Modine"? bar from Pottery barn, and you can extend it to make a big bar. I think turning your garage into that space would be awesome! Pool tables need a ton of room, I forget how many feet off of each end, so the garage would be perfect!

  10. I like the bar idea. It's almost as if dining rooms aren't really practicaly anymore. We have the same deal - it's basically an unused room (and I hate the uncomfortable set that I've used since college). The pool table reminds me of the "Break Up" ha but I know you'd do it up right. Team Theo :)

  11. I love a formal dining room and I don't think I'd be willing to sacrifice it. A bar/lounge area is cool and fun...but I think it's meant more for a finished basement. I do think doing it in your garage is a cool idea though!

  12. I say that is fine and dandy --- in a garage or bonus room! I love me a dining room and I can't wait to have one!

  13. I agree with you lady - dining rooms are a must have, and even though they don't get used all the time, you want to have them for big occasions and family stuff like Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. Putting a bar/lounge in your garage is a great idea though! And I think it is a fair compromise ;)

  14. I SO wish we had a dining room! If I had one, I'm not sure I could give it up.

  15. I think I agree with you - I love (well I don't have but if I did I would love it) having the dining room for entertaining. Do you have a basement? Isn't that where lounges/man caves belong?! I am really loving that second picture you posted of the Mediteranean family room.. now that would be an awesome basement!

  16. We don't use our dining room very often (entertaining/special occasions only) but I could never turn it into a 'lounge' area.
