Dinner and a Movie

DINNER

There's a restaurant here in Charleston called Jack's Cosmic Dogs. They make the.best.hot.dogs. Unfortunately they closed the one closest to us and the one on James Island so we never go anymore. There's only the original location left in Mt. Pleasant. The other night Theo said he felt like eating a hot dog with blue cheese coleslaw and being the junk food junky that I am I said "YES!" and started looking for Jack's famous blue cheese coleslaw recipe online. Thank God for Pinterest because I found it. It was so easy to make. Jack usually tops his dogs with a sweet potato mustard which is phenomenal but we just used regular old ketchup and yellow mustard. He also only uses Pepperidge Farm buns and Boar's Head hot dogs. We just bought Oscar Meyer Selects Turkey Hotdogs and normal hotdog buns. For the slaw, I went the easy route and bought a bag of premade cabbage used for colslaw. It had the red and green cabbage and carrots already cut up.

Jack's Cosmic Dogs Blue Cheese Coleslaw
adapted from Jan Cooks

Ingredients

1 small head green cabbage, finely sliced
1/4 small head red cabbage, finely sliced
1 carrot, peeled and finely sliced
1 cup sour cream
1 cup mayo
1 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese
s&p to taste

Recipe

Up to 2 hours before serving, combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Cover and reserve at room temperature.

To assemble the "Jack's Way": spread a generous amount of sweet potato mustard on both sides of the inside of the bun. Top with the warm hot dog (Jack boils the dogs then grills them in butter) then add about 1/4 cup of the slaw.

We served ours with fresh green beans sprinkled with Parmesan cheese, you know to cancel out the fattening hotdogs.

MOVIE

I know this movie isn't going to be a crowd pleaser, I even debated posting about it but Theo convinced me too. Let me start off by saying this movie was scary as f*ck! Theo and I both love Jessica Chastain and both love scary movies so we figured we'd give Mama a shot. We watched it on Cinemax on Directv. It's about these little girls who go missing for years and end up being found by their uncle. He takes them in to raise them but they've been living in the wild for so long and they keep talking about "Mama" who took care of them. What you find out is Mama isn't a normal person and strange things start to happen around the house. I can't get the image of Mama out of my head! Just writing about it freaks me out! If you love scary movies this is a good one to watch. If you have to sleep with every light on in your house after watching a scary movie, then stay away from Mama.

  10. YUM - those hot dogs! And you can't even taste the difference with turkey dogs which is amazing. That movie is way too disturbing for me I'm guessing. We started "American Horror Story" and are addicted - and terrified - with every episode.
