Weekly Obsessions: Kiss My Face

by Ally- Life as I know it, 5:00 AM
When I started researching what was in our food, like GMO's, I also came across how little the FDA regulates our personal care products and how there's so many chemicals in our soap and body wash that just shouldn't be in there. A common ingredient you may see is Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), it's in EVERYTHING from soap, to shampoo, to cleaning supplies. SLS is an emulsifier and a foaming agent, so basically any product you have that foams up probably has SLS in it. Ok's what's the big deal, when SLS is manufactured it's contaminated with dioxide that is a known carcinogen by-product (cancer causing.) Obviously everything is fine in moderation but it's the gradual, cumulative effects of long term use that are the concern. It's also a known stripping agent so it strips the natural oils out of your hair and skin. Another problem is there's a major lack in studies for all chemicals in personal care products so know one really knows what the long term effects are. Whether SLS can cause cancer I don't want be the guinea pig, and there's so many products without it and that are safer.

Parabens are another common ingredient used in personal care products to prolong the shelf life. Although they can make your shampoo last longer, but do we really need that?, it's a hormone disrupter that can result in hairloss. As soon as I told Theo that the shampoo he's been using could be causing him hairloss he went out that day and bought a paraben free shampoo that day. He didn't want to play around with his hair.

Another chemical you want to stay away from is the word "Parfum". You want the ingredients on your lotion or shampoo to say where the actual scent comes from rather than a generic Parfum which is really just a synthetic fragrance that can cause irritation to your skin and scalp.

And I can't forget about Phthalates. These are endocrine disrupting chemicals used to make plastic soft and flexible. You may of heard of them called PVC. They're readily absorbed through the skin and and what's scary is they can cross the placenta exposing fetuses during their most critical time of development.

I read about Kiss My Face soaps from Food Babe and randomly picked up a bottle on one of my Whole Foods trips. I was amazed with how soft the soap left my hands, not dry and cracked like normal soap, and it smelled amazing. I've since switched over all the soap in our house to the Kiss My Face brand and now use their body wash and lotion too. Their products never have SLS, SLES, parabens, parfum or phthalates. I like their Moisture Hand Soaps for the bathroom. My favorite is Coconut and Olive and Aloe.

I also love their Peaceful Patchouli Moisturizing Lotion and Shower Gel.

I use their Castile Soap in the kitchen. Castile soap is really cool because it's an all in one soap, you can use it to wash your hair, hands, even your dishes. You can even use it to clean your house. It's very concentrated so a little goes a long way.

Working in a hospital I know I'm exposing myself to millions of chemicals so I like to know that at home everything I use, for the most part, is clean. Their products are currently all on sale on their website but I'll also buy some from Amazon.
