I've Been Keeping A Little Secret...

by Ally- Life as I know it, 5:00 AM

I'm so happy I can finally share that Theo, Pixie, and I are expecting a little baby in October! Anyone who's ever been pregnant knows how hard it is keeping it a secret for months so it's such a relief to be able to finally talk about it! This is the reason for the lack of paleo eating and lack of posts in general. I haven't been the sickest but I haven't been feeling like myself either. I never got morning sickness but boy do I have food aversions. Because it's just so much fun talking about it, sorry if it bores you, which I totally get, then just bypass this post :), I thought I would answer some questions:

How did we find out?
I'm not going to pretend it was an accident or that we just said if it happens it'll happen. I had that mentality at first but after the first month of nothing happening, I went in panic mode. I'm not sure if it's because I'm a nurse or that I'm just a worrier and assume the worst it all times but I was so scared something was wrong with me or Theo. I know that seems stupid but I hear of infertility SO often and you go through your whole life trying not to get pregnant so the first month of casually trying and nothing happening, I just knew something was wrong. So I researched and read books and bought some Wondfo Ovulation Sticks off Amazon. I can't recommend those sticks enough. They're cheap, I got 50 sticks and 20 pregnancy tests for $20! So once you become an obsessive Pee-On-A-Sticker, trust me you will, it's good you didn't spend a fortune. I loved being in control and knowing I was doing something and could see if I did in fact ovulate or not that month. Well it worked out and on Super Bowl Sunday I took a pregnancy test and it was positive! It's the craziest thing seeing that double line. You don't believe it at first so you go out and buy 2 more tests. I told Theo when we came home from his friend's house that night and made a sign for Pixie to carry in her mouth when he came to the door. She was too excited to see her Daddy so she wouldn't carry it and I just had to hand it to him. He was excited but also said "Well it's not like we weren't trying." Men. I feel SO lucky that we got pregnant fast. I'm thankful for it everyday.

How am I feeling?
I was all good till week 6, and then the food aversions hit hard. We were doing so well meal planning and I can remember being at the grocery store trying to find stuff for dinner that week and everything sounded gross. I've been living off veggie subs and yogurt since then. Luckily I've never gotten sick or even really got nauseous but I would feel queasy if I didn't eat often. I've been a lot more tired and all I want to do is go to bed when I get home from work. I always take a nap on my days off. I'm feeling better now and my appetite has picked up but I still don't want to eat chicken unless it's in something, like chicken salad. When dinnertime comes it's really hard to find something to eat because that's usually when my food aversions are worse or I'm just so bloated.

Are we going to find out the gender?
Oh yes and I'm not feeling one way or the other. I know some women say they just knew they were having a boy or a girl but I just go back and forth. I've been feeling majorly bloated lately and I had a friend say when she was pregnant with her daughter she was so bloated and that's how you know you're having a girl but who knows. We don't care either way, just want it to be healthy and happy.

Baby H's first gifts

Pregnancy and is an amazing yet scary time. Maybe it's just because I see all the bad stories working as a nurse so I'm more aware of what can go wrong but the hardest part is knowing it's out of your control. You can take your vitamins and eat the right things but the rest is up to your body. The first ultrasound at 8 weeks is so surreal and even after our 12 week ultrasound, it's hard to come to terms that there really is a baby in there moving around. All you can do is do the right things and hope and pray everything else comes out great. I'm already high risk because of my Polycystic Kidney Disease. The biggest worry is pre eclampsia but my blood pressure has been great and I'm on a pregnancy safe low dose blood pressure medication so that's all I can do. Worrying doesn't help a thing. Although food and fatigue has been an issue, overall I really do feel good and have a good feeling everything will be fine. Whether it will or not, if you keep positive thoughts, positive things will happen.

I'm not sure if I'm going to do bumpdates. There's so many floating around the internet and when you get pregnant they're a life savor but I also know for those who aren't preggers, they're so boring. I started doing every even week bumpdates just saved as a draft I might publish. Maybe I'll keep up with it, tell me what y'all think bumpdates or no bumpdates? I also did a ton of research on the best vitamins to take so expect a post about that in the near future.

If you have any questions on getting pregnant or using ovulation sticks, ask away. I have no problem talking about it and I don't know why some women act like it's such a secret. When we were trying I can remember searching for blogs about getting pregnant and I couldn't find any. It was just announcements on getting pregnant but no talked about if they used any help or how long it took.

Can't wait for Baby H to arrive and to share this exciting time with you all!!

  5. Yay yay yay!!!!! I'm so excited for you!! I'm so happy you feel good- I had morning sickness with both and would never wish it on my worst enemy. The food aversions are bad. I was the same way with chicken, except for chicken salad was the only chicken I could eat. I seriously got a chicken salad sandwich from Panera at least once a week, that was only with Miller with Matthew's pregnancy I didn't eat any chicken really at all. Being a mom is the best, seriously, you will love it! Let me know if you have any questions or anything. Also do bump updates if you want- I never tire of hearing about other people's pregnancies.

  8. Yay!!!! Congratulations on this wonderful news! I hope you have an easy and happy pregnancy! I had the worst food aversion too...Italian food. I still gag sometimes talking about it. It was rough. Other than that, I only got sick when I took my prenatals. I had to chew a Tums right before I took them every night. So weird. Pregnancy is wild!!!

  15. Yay!!! I am so excited for you!! Food aversions are a pain especially when you have a little family took cook for. When I was preg with my daughter it was tough trying to plan healthy meals for everyone else.(The boys and my husband) That was my thing too if I didn't eat enough id be instantly nauseous. Plain chicken was also not my fave. Do the bump updates. I'd love to read them. It is such a fun time in your life and it actually makes me sad I won't get to experience it again. 3 is enough for us though. ;) Btw coconut oil is the best at preventing stretch marks! Trust me I've picked up some good tips over the years! Congrats again! xo

  32. Congratulations! This is so exciting! When are you due? You're so right that there is nothing in blogland about getting pregnant. I mean, we all know the birds and the bees part, but no one talks about the other stuff. We are going to start trying in a year or so, but I'd love the hear more from a nurse's perspective.

  33. Yay! Congrats! I'm 18 weeks pregnant and due Sept 6th. I've loved being able to look back at bloggers bumpdates and I would like to be able to follow along with you! And to hear a nurse's perspective would be great. I felt the same way about food in the beginning but finally got my appetite back last week and I'm not quite as tired. I work on my feet all day too, so it's pretty exhausting.

  37. Congratulations to you both! I would love to share any tips or tricks on getting pregnant. I can't wait to read about the vitamin recommendations. I currently take Target brand prenatals mainly because they are delicious but I know there are probably better ones out there. I vote yes to bump updates too!
