My 1st Trimester Essentials

Now that I'm officially out of the 1st trimester, woo hoo!, I thought I'd share what got me through it.

I was really, really lucky that I never threw up during those first few weeks. I would get nauseous if I didn't eat often and thanks to food aversions, I didn't want to eat a thing. My doctor asked if I wanted Zofran but I wanted to try other things before resorting to medicine, especially since I knew it wasn't going to last long anyways. I came across these Preggie Pop Drops at Earth Fare and they were a true life saver when nausea would hit. Something about the sugar and sour combo would nip that nausea in the bud and I would feel instantly better. I still carry these around in my purse just in case that queasy feeling comes on.

Publix Veggie Subs
Pretend there's no meat there!

There was a good month there where I was living off of Pub Subs for lunch and dinner daily. They were the only thing I could even imagine eating and they were good. What's funny is whenever I would tell people all I could eat was Veggie Subs they would say "Oh that's healthy!" Um no, It had iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, banana peppers, tons of cheese, and tons of mayo and can't forget a fat sub roll. I guess it's better than eating a cheeseburger but definitely wasn't as good as eating a healthy salad.

When you get pregnant you also get super thirsty. Your body has an extra 4 pints of blood pumping through it plus amniotic fluid is replaced every 30 minutes so that equals the increase for fluids. I bought this water bottle from TJ Maxx for around $7 I think and it's been awesome. I love that it's glass so I don't have to worry about it having BPA in it and it has a twist top so I can carry it in my purse without worrying about it spilling. I aim to drink 2 liters of water a day so since this bottle is 600 ml I try to fill it up and drink it about 3-4 times a day.

This book is truly awesome and if you only buy one book during your pregnancy, buy this book, it's all you need. It was written by an OB/GYN and a pediatrician and it's just honest about everything. They use easy words and really just give you the nitty gritty about what you need to know. For instance I wondered about getting my hair highlighted, and the book said highlights are safe the whole time, all over coloring should wait till the 2nd trimester.  I looked it up online too and got so many answers, but I loved knowing that this book was written by two doctors so I could trust their responses. They've also written a Baby 411 and Toddler 411 book that I can plan to buy as well. I do feel bad though, because of this book I really don't have any questions when I see my actual doctor, this book answers them all!

I plan on doing a separate post on the vitamins I take but for now these are the prenatals I take daily. These vitamins are made from food which is supposedly better for your body to adsorb then synthetic vitamins. They have 800 mg of folate, the natural form of folic acid, 400 mg is plenty but why not take more right? These have tons of Vitamin D which is good for you and the baby and they may even have prevented me from feeling nauseous because of the added ginger. I really liked these because you can take them on an empty stomach and although you have to take 3 pills, they're capsule form so if big pills are hard for you swallow you can empty them into a smoothie or a juice. I can't recommend these prenatals enough.

The baby and placenta are growing so fast during the first trimester and that leaves you feeling like you've run a marathon when all you've done is walk from the couch to the bathroom. Eating and sleeping are all you want to do so having a comfortable pair of pj's a must. These Target ones are my favorite. They're so soft and comfy and are the perfect coverage so if I have to let the dog outside I don't feel like I have to throw clothes on.

What are some of your 1st trimester favorites? Any recommendations for the 2nd trimester?

  1. I'm honestly so terrified of getting sick while pregnant - I realize that is the weirdest thing, but it's my weird thing lol!! Thanks for sharing those drops...when the time comes I know I'll be using them (or hopefully not because I'll be like you!) xo, Biana - BlovedBoston

  2. I feel like Im definitely going to need those drops when I eventually get pregnant. I get sick to my stomach for random reasons now so I cant imagine how it will be when Im pregnant! And even though the Publix subs arent the healthiest thing, there are worse things you could have been eating!

  3. I have those same PJs, they are sooo comfy. I already take prenatal vitamins...for skin and hair, and ya know, just in case! Those ones you talked about sound amazing, I think they may have to replace the ones I've currently been taking.

  7. I want those pajamas!!!! They're so cute, I'm going to hunt them down! I love Baby 411- such a great book, so I will have to buy pregnancy! Thanks for the tip! And you're totally right about needing a good water bottle. I don't go anywhere without a full 32oz camelback.

  8. Oh how I wish those preggy pops were around (or that I knew about them) when I was pregnant - they sound great. And veggie subs are amazing - my favorite and would hit the spot for me too when I was pregnant!

  10. Gosh SO sorry how hard it was for you to find something to eat. Publix to the rescue for sure! Thankfully there are also great alternatives to medicine it sounds like. Nausea is something I bet I'll deal with if expecting so remind me of those drops :)

  11. My nausea and morning sickness was so bad during the first trimester with both I could barely drink water- it sucked because I normally drink so much water! I lived on seltzer water and ginger ale. I also could only consume pizza. I remember asking the doctor if my baby would be ok if I only ate pizza and drank ginger ale and she just laughed at me and said it would be fine and I would get through it. The preggie pops helped me a bit and I had to take the chewable vitamins because swallow pills made me sick but I might look into those for now since I'm still breastfeeding.
