The 2nd Trimester: The Stuff They Don't Warn You About

It's so surreal that in 12 weeks I'll be having baby, maybe sooner if I'm lucky. ;) Time really goes by fast overall but I'm not in the clear yet! Overall the 2nd trimester is breeze, but it still has it's own issues!

Pee.All.The.Time
So I don't know who said once you hit the 2nd trimester you don't have to pee as much because it's a lie. I think I peed more in the 2nd trimester than ever! It makes sense you would because the baby is only getting bigger and putting more pressure on your bladder. And then there are those times when I can literally feel him putting pressure on it, like he's adjusting his body. It doesn't last long but when it comes on, I'll have to pee NOW but I've also learned that if you wait a few seconds it'll pass.

Always Starving
The 2nd trimester is definitely the time when you gain a lot of weight and so does the baby. Which means you are starving all the time. I find that I'm most hungry when I first wake up. I'll eat breakfast, then an hour later eat a whole other breakfast, then eat lunch 2 hours after. You can also go from "nah I'm not hungry" to "I NEED FOOD NOW" in minutes. I can't tell you how many times Theo will say, "what do you want to do for dinner?" and I'll say "let's just wait. I'm full right now." and seriously barely 5 minutes will have passed and I'm rummaging in the pantry for anything to eat. It's kind of like period hunger times 100.

Stuffy Nose
I've always had allergies so having a stuffy nose is nothing new but it's just a lot worse now. I'm always congested and I guess it's a pregnancy symptom. Your body produces more mucus everywhere when you're pregnant so it makes sense for your nose to be in on the action too.

Crazy Dreams
The dreams you have while you're pregnant are like watching a movie. They're so detailed and so much happens. A lot of times they involve having a baby but not always. You'll have animals in your dreams, people you haven't seen in years or just saw yesterday, and just random stuff will happen. I had a reoccurring dream about giving birth to a little black baby girl but that wasn't the issue, the issue was I forgot to breastfeed her and 6 months had passed and she hadn't eaten at all! The other night I had a dream I delivered the baby through my belly button at 27 weeks pregnant and I took him to the hospital and no one cared! I had the umbilical cord hanging out that needed to be cut and they weren't concerned! The dreams are just bizarre.

HOT
I was never a hot-natured person, well I am now! I used to always be cold and wear a jacket to work everyday in the summer and now I find I'm hot in short sleeves sometimes. It really is crazy how much hotter your body gets when you're pregnant. Same goes for showers, I used to have the water practically scalding and now I keep it barely warm.

Heart Palpitations
I used to be a Cardiac Nurse so anything involving my heart freaks me out. I've had a few moments where my heart will feel like it's skipping some beats and I start to panic. I'm an obsessive Googler so I quickly Googled "Heart Skipping Beats and Pregnancy", and whew, it's a normal thing in your 2nd trimester. Your heart has to work a lot harder when you're pregnant so you're more likely to have some premature beats. I noticed them mainly when I would go from walking or standing to sitting. I don't get them a ton but that doesn't mean they don't scare me!

Shortness of Breath
The stuffy nose combined with 15+ extra pounds plus your organs being pushed up on your diaphragm means you get short of breath when you exert yourself. Just going up the stairs makes me lose my breath. But whatever, it's all part of this whole baby making process.

So the 2nd trimester is great compared to the 1st! I've heard that the 3rd trimester can be a doozy, just because you're exhausted all the time and ready to get this baby out! Any tips?

  5. Overall I loved the 2nd trimester too but by far the worst part for me was having to pee ALL the time! I do believe I actually cried twice when there was no bathroom in sight and we were stuck in bumper to bumper traffic!
