Four Movies to Watch

Theo and I are kind of movie people. He's definitely more than me but whenever I talk to friends about movies they always say "oh I haven't seen a movie in years!" Really? We see at least 2 movies a month at the theaters and watch a good bit at home too. I'm pretty picky when it comes to movies. It has to keep my attention enough that I stay awake. I can't stand too much action or too much boring drama. I kind of prefer scary movies because those definitely keep me awake but as I'm getting older the thrill of a scary movie isn't there like it used to be. Since I'm boring and pregnant now, we've been watching a lot more movies so I thought I'd share some of our recent ones.

Frality

I guess this movie came out years ago in 2001 but I had never heard of it before. Theo suggested we watch it one night, it was playing on one of the movie channels a few months ago. Frality is a thriller but with an awesome twist. It starts off as Matthew McConaughey going to a police station to turn his brother in as the serial killer that's been killing a lot of people lately. He starts to tell the detective the strange story of his upbringing to make more sense of why his brother is the way he is. MM and his brother were raised by their single dad. One night an angel comes to speak to their dad and tells him to kill demons. MM's character starts to doubt his dad after he keeps killing all of these seemingly normal people. He thinks his dad has gone crazy and made this angel story up. I won't give anymore away but the ending is so good and not what you'd expect.

Ex Machina

Ex Machina sounded pretty decent when you read the synopsis but it was just plain weird. I guess I should of known, it was Sci Fi after all. It starts off as the main character Caleb gets picked in a competition to go meet the creator of the company he works for named Nathan. He basically works for a Google like company and Nathan is a multi billionaire. He gets to Nathan's house and finds out that he has made a robot named Ava that he wants Caleb to meet with everyday. He wants Caleb to interact with Ava and to evaluate her emotions and reactions. Ava ends up secretly telling Caleb that Nathan can't be trusted and that she wants to escape. Once Nathan finds out that Ava is telling Caleb this, he starts to tell Caleb that his is being manipulated by Ava. So Caleb has to decide who he can trust. If you like Science Fiction you'd probably really like this movie. I think Sci Fi is just odd so I had kind of mixed reviews.

The Business of Being Born

Before you think Theo watched this with me, yah right. I watched it at home one day by myself. I streamed it off YouTube onto the TV by Chromecast. It used to be on Netflix but they took it off for some reason. I remember years ago when this movie came out. It was made by Rikki Lake right after she had her water birth. I watched it with the intent of just educating myself on how the whole maternity healthcare system works. The movie is biased towards using midwives and having a natural birth but that was something I didn't know much about so I enjoyed learning more. It's very eye opening to see how OB's deliver babys versus midwives but I don't think one way is right or wrong. In the movie they talk about how OB's are really just surgeons and how time is money for them. They use pitocin to get labor started, then an epidural to dull the pain which also dulls the contractions so then you're forced to up the pitocin which then puts the baby in distress and you end up having to have an emergent C-Section. I've talked to so many people who had inductions and epidurals and didn't need emergent C-Sections and had great labors. I've also talked to women who had natural births and that worked out well too. I think you have to do what works for you and the safest way for you and the baby. I didn't like how the movie was one sided and if you use a Doctor you're basically putting yourself and your baby at risk for more complications. But with that said, I did enjoy learning more.

Vacation

I'm not going to lie, I'm scared to go to the movies now. After the movie theater shooting in Louisiana a few weeks ago, I really didn't care if I ever saw another movie again. Theo convinced me to see Vacation at a Sunday matinee showing so I felt a little safer but I definitely looked around for anyone suspicious. I hate that something so simple as going to see a movie can turn into such a nightmare. Anyways, enough about my newest fear of going to see a movie, Vacation was pretty good. It had way too much language in it and really wanted to be raunchy and over the top which I really could have done without but it had a lot of funny parts too. For some reason I remember the old Vacation movies as being more family oriented but everyone I talk to says no they were pretty bad for their time so I guess the new Vacation movie was as well. But can I just say how much Chevy Chase let himself go? He used to be such a hottie, he did not age well.

Yikes!

Any good movies you've seen lately?

  1. I've never heard of any of these except Vacation and I was hesitant about it because I don't know how you can remake that movie! And yes, Chevy did not age well at all lol! And I agree about the movies, that is so scary!!

  2. That first movie sounds great, I'm definitley going to check it out. Zack loves movies and I'm kind of indifferent. If it's cold or wet outside I'm down with staying in and watching movies, but this time of year it's really hard to get me to sit inside the AC for that long. I have a fear of going to movie theaters too after the shootings, I'd honestly just rather wait for things to come out later so I can watch them from the privacy, and safety, of my own home! So sad we have to feel that way, when I was younger it never would have even crossed my mind to be scared about going to see a movie.

  3. Oh my gosh! Chevy Chase looks terrible!!! Yikes is right. And seriously, I've been hesitant to go to the movies since the Colorado shooting a couple of years ago. It's so sad that we have to feel that way. But honestly, Netflix is where it's at anyways - I can wear my pajamas and never have to get off the couch haha.

  10. I'm totally with you about going to the movies. For the time being, I'm staying away. I think the theaters need to be more secure. With that being said, I do really want to see Vacation, it looks so funny.

  11. You are so brave to watch The Business of Being Born! I am taking the Blind Squirrel approach .... the less I know, the less I will freak out!!!! But I will say that Reid and I are such movie fans and we are trying to pack in as many movies now before Lucie has other plans for us!
