The Things People Say When You're Pregnant

by Ally- Life as I know it, 5:00 AM
So let me start by saying I'm not trying to complain about being pregnant at all. I'm thankful every single day to have this little boy growing inside of me and I worry like it's my job. But, when you're pregnant, especially the last few weeks of pregnancy, people feel the need to tell you their opinion. I mean what other time in your life do random strangers comment on the way you look? You really can't go 5 minutes without someone saying something. It's funny at times, kind of offensive at others, but people mean well and are just making conversation. All day, everyday. Here's what I've been hearing the most, I'd love to hear what you got told when you were pregnant!

"You're so tiny! There's no way you're having a baby in a few weeks!"
Ok, so this should be a compliment, and I really think people mean it as one, but being told you look tiny is not much better than "Geez are you having twins?" My response is usually, "Well actually he's measuring just fine thank you." I feel like I have to justify my "tiny belly" to a stranger! Women are unfortunately hypersensitive about their weight and being pregnant makes it 10 times worse. The best thing to say to a pregnant woman is "You look great!" Because deep down inside she's worrying if that baby is growing well enough and your comment might send her over the edge!

"You look like you're going to pop!"
I literally go from someone saying "you're so tiny" to "you look like you're going to pop!" from someone else in less than 10 minutes. "Thanks for your concern random janitor guy, but my doctor has confirmed that I will in fact not "pop." Now my water on the other hand..."

"Your boobs have gotten smaller and your stomach has gotten bigger!"
Someone really said this to me the other day when I was trying to eat my lunch. I was like "uhh..yah I guess so..? Have my boobs gotten smaller? I'm so confused, why are you looking at my boobs?"

"It's your first baby, you won't make it to 40 weeks!"
That's for my baby to know and me to find out!

"Whoa you got bigger overnight!"
"Really?! Thanks I didn't notice. But you know what, I am growing a child who is gaining weight pretty quickly so I just may have gotten bigger overnight!" I mean really.

"You're having a boy? I had three boys and man were they a handful!"
"Yes I am having a boy and I'm really excited about it." I know kids aren't easy but I'm looking forward to each stage as it comes. And besides, my kid is going to be an angel so I don't know what you're talking about. :)

Oh the joys of being pregnant. And I know after the baby comes the questions will turn to, "So when's the next baby coming?!"

  1. The best & totally agree! Best of luck, you look great! :)

  2. Yesssss. People are nuts!!!!!!!

  3. People told me all the time I looked small with Miller and people always told me I was huge with Matthew and I'm pretty sure I was actually the same size but way more swollen and puffy with Miller so I fell like people have no idea haha!! The boys comment is great and it doesn't ever go away. Every day when with out with errands - oh two boys, you must have your hands full!

  4. Between the comments and random touching I often felt like I wanted a big bubble around me. I got, and still get, endless comments about both having my hands full and my poor husband (because we have all girls). I'm with you -just say "you look great!" Or "what a beautiful family!"

  5. Every single one of my friends with kids have said the same thing you did. I don't understand why random people feel the need to comment about someone's pregnancy. So annoying! Lucky for you, you do look amazing, your baby is healthy and he IS going to be an angel :)

  6. People, I tell ya. You look fabulous and you're right, you'll do great! xo,

  7. After being pregnant and hearing these comments too, I think people are just bad at small talk! They don't know what else to say so they go with the generic pregnancy comments. I will say though, after being asked if I was checked for twins when I was only like 30 weeks pregnant, I think I would welcome any and all "your belly is tiny" comments!! No one wants to be told they look like a whale! haha

  8. im sure your babe will be an angel :) !!! and yahhh the boob comment is a weird one! unless it's coming from your husband then no one else should be saying it! xo jillian - cornflake dreams

  9. I would be so weirded out if somebody other than a good friend commented on my boob size haha. This is what makes me nervous about becoming pregnant, there are certain family members with no filter and I fear I will be easily sent over the edge! This should be required reading.

  10. Ughhhhh seriously why is it the minute someone is pregnant people feel the need to completely over share on things like that? Why is someone talking about your boobs? Like back off!

  11. Ha! People are idiots. I actually had someone say to me, Oh you are pregnant, I thought you were just letting yourself go. REALLY?

  12. Small talk struggles. My issue was that people were always telling me I ought to be sitting down on the train yet no one ever got up for me! A couple more weeks girl, so excited for you!

  13. Wow, people say the darndest things! lol I can't believe some of those comments, but at least you have a good sense of humor about it. Btw, you look great! :)

  14. Isn't it amazing what people will say to you when you are pregnant! Everyone has their own opinion. I often would try to avoid making eye contact with people simply so we wouldn't engage in some ridiculous small talk that they would insist upon telling me about what they thought of my pregnancy. hang in there! then once you have the baby everyone will be stopping to comment on the baby. i never know what to think of that either!

  15. Maybe it can be chalked up to preg hormones... I frequently wanted to smack people who made idiotic comments regarding my pregnancy/pregnancy appearance! One of my highlights was the cafeteria ladies at work (I work at a hospital) who when I told them I was having a girl told me, "Ah yes, you can really tell you're expecting a girl. You've spread in the back." Umm... at what point in life is it ever appropriate to tell someone their ass has gotten bigger? : )

  16. I love this! I'd love to know more of what to and what not to say. I'm sure I will feel the same way when I'm pregnant!

I love reading your comments! Thanks for taking the time to read my blog!
