non toxic skincare routine for acne prone skin

by Ally- Life as I know it, 5:00 AM
I've dealt with acne since what feels like forever. It's come in waves for sure. Obviously pretty bad during my puberty years, bad around my period/ovulation, when I got pregnant, after I had my baby, and when I stopped breastfeeding. As I've gotten older it's definitely gotten worse and harder to manage. What used to work, benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, barely even touch it. Literally days after I stopped breastfeeding in April my acne came back with a vengeance. I ended up going to see my dermatologist for a skin cancer check in July and was really hoping she wouldn't mention the mess all over my jaw and chin. Somehow I hoped that maybe it wasn't as bad as I thought it was, yeah right, but of course she did. She asked me what I was doing for my skin, then she gave me like 5 prescriptions for topicals and two oral medications to take. I was familiar with all the meds because I've used most of them in the past. They do work but they cost a fortune because insurance doesn't cover acne treatment normally and all they do is mask the symptoms, they don't get rid of the actual problem that's causing your acne. I also didn't want to pump my body with unnecessary antibiotics and medicine that can alter my hormones.  So I didn't get any of the prescriptions filled and decided I was going to get rid of my acne the natural way. And almost 2 months later my face looks pretty darn good. It's not perfect by any means, but it's ten times better than it was. Here's what I used:

This is my newest addition to my skincare routine and it might be my favorite. Beautycounter's Charcoal Soap is amazing. I mean there's a reason it's always sold out! If you work in the medical field you may know that they give activated charcoal to patients who drank poison to get them to vomit and to get rid of the poison so it doesn't soak in their stomach. Well think of this soap doing the same thing for your skin. It draws out clogged pores and bacteria that lead to acne. I do a double wash with it at night to make sure my makeup is all off. My complexion looks so much better since I started using this soap. I just I wish I hadn't waited so long to use it!

I love the Eminence brand for acne. I actually started using it when I was pregnant because it's totally safe and it does a good job. The Clear Skin Probiotic Moisturizer mixed with the Willow Bark Booster-Serum works really well for getting rid of angry breakouts. I use it daily, morning and night, even if I'm not broken out as a prophylactic too.

I was never a mask user till recently because I never thought they could make a difference. I mean what's wearing a mask for 10 minutes really going to do for your skin? I was way wrong because the masks I've been using have made a tremendous difference in my skin. I alternate between Origins Charcoal Mask and Cosmedix Pure Enzymes mask nightly. The charcoal mask obviously works similar to the soap but goes even deeper to clean your skin and pores. My skin feels so smooth and fresh after I use it. Pure Enzymes is another favorite because has lactic acid in it which exfoliates your skin and it's helped to lighten up my acne scars and keep acne at bay. I love the way my skin feels and looks after using both of these masks.

If you're prone to acne around your jaw and chin like I am, it could be made worse by consuming dairy. It's caused by the hormones that naturally occur in cow's milk.  I mean think about it, cow's milk is for baby cows to drink so it has lots of growth hormones in it. It may help baby cows grow big and strong but if you're sensitive to extra hormones in your body it can also wreak havoc on your skin. So I've given up all dairy to see if it would help and fortunately/unfortunately it has! Unfortunately because there goes my beloved blue cheese! It wasn't overnight but slowly overtime I've noticed my skin doesn't breakout like it used it around those certain times of the month. I recently started to eat very small amounts of cheese here and there to see if there's an amount I can tolerate before it causes acne but that's about as far as my dairy consumption goes these days!

I also try to stay away from desserts and processed foods because the high sugar content can cause your blood sugar to spike which causes your hormones to fluctuate and lead to acne.

Every morning I drink a cup of warm water with lemon and cayenne to detox my liver and get rid of toxins that get built up overnight. Teas have been a big part of my nightly routine before bed as well. I like to drink Roasted Dandelion Tea and Peppermint Tea. You can read about all the awesome benefits of Dandelion Tea here.  The menthol in Peppermint Tea is a muscle relaxer and after just a few sips I feel instantly relaxed and ready to go to sleep. I recently started to put my phone down at 9 pm, don't touch it till the morning, get into bed, read a good book and sip on some tea. It's such a great way to de-stress and wind down after a long day at work.

So this is what's working for me. I think getting rid of dairy has made the biggest difference but having a consistent skincare routine helps a lot too. And finding ways to handle stress and anxiety is always good for your skin. All of these products I listed are free of toxins that known to be carcinogens, cause birth defects, skin irritation, or interfere with your hormones, and are safe if you're pregnant/breastfeeding which is a big deal to me. Who wants to have to change their skincare for a good year or so when they have a baby! Plus something that isn't safe to use while you're growing a human, probably isn't that safe anyways.

Hope this helps someone who's dealing with annoying adult acne. Adult acne is nothing like teenage acne that can be combated with Proactiv!

  1. LOVE love love this post. I struggle with acne too, and it flares terribly during that time of the month. I've been trying out lots of safe products, but haven't found the perfect solution yet. It seems like acne solutions and safer products just don't go together! Definitely going to have to try some of these though. I use Shea Moisture's African Black Soap and Acure Organics Brightening Facial Scrub (love this one) and they seem to help. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Ugh adult acne is the worst! I need to give these a try!

  3. Warm water with lemon i've done - add cayenne? How does it taste .... ?

  4. Ugh! I need to be unlazy and try some of these!!! :) I am in an OK spot right now in pregnancy where the acne has subdued a bit but I am prepared for it to go haywire after delivery!!!
